T-Dog: "wtf is on my shoe?" |
Series: The Walking Dead
Episode: Season 3 Episode 1 "Seed"
Air Date: October 14, 2012
60 Second Recap: The gang survived the winter without anyone dying. For the last few months they've been going from house to house scavenging for food. Everybody is badass now and knows how to shoot a gun. Lori is uber pregnant. Andrea and her katana sword wielding rescuer, Michonne, have also survived but are still separated from the group. Andrea is really sick and not doing well. Rick and Daryl find an abandoned prison. The entire group helps clear out the zombies in the front enclosure. Rick and Lori are having marital issues. Daryl gives Carol a back rub but then gets self conscious about it and turns beet red when she playfully flirts with him. Lori is worried about giving birth to a zombie baby. Rick wants the group to clear out the inside of the prison. Herschel comes along to help but gets bitten on the leg by a walker. Rick chops off Herschel's leg in the cafeteria to stop the spread of the infection. Rick and the group come across a small group of survivors (prison inmates) that have been hiding out in the cafeteria.
Full disclosure: During The Walking Dead's hiatus I read the entire Walking Dead comic book series. Although the comics offered a significantly different story in terms of characters (most comic book characters do not exist in the tv series), both mediums did a wonderful job of conveying the hopeless, savage nature of the post Apocalyptic world. Personally, I prefer the television series (better character development). The comic books clarified a lot of Season 3's major plot points though, (i.e. Michonne, The Governor and the prison) so forgive me if I ever forget that most viewers are learning about them for the first time.
Review: Wow. It's been a long 7 months hasn't it?
In what (hopefully) was a subtle middle finger to the "there's too much talking" crowd that bemoaned the first half of last season, the opening sequence went on for 4 minutes and 58 seconds without a word of dialogue. Everyone shuffled through the house, cleared it of zombies, rested for a bit, then packed up and left to escape an oncoming herd all without saying a single thing to each other. It was brilliant and effective. We got all we needed to know about how the group's been doing just by watching what they've become; robotic, animalistic and desperate. These guys really are the walking dead.
For the gore loving crowd, "Seed" had more than enough action and zombie killings. The makeup department clearly had their fun with this episode. (Just think about how much nerd-gasming there was going on in the room when they came up with the riot gear walker's face falling off idea.) There were beheadings and stabbings with pipes, machetes, knives and arrows. The threat of zombies was real again.
It looks like the producers and writers really took what the fans and critics had to say and actually worked with it. The result was a touching, violent and adrenaline filled return to television. At this rate, The Walking Dead might just live up to all of its potential, and then some. Hallelujah, Sunday nights are awesome again!
Best zombie kill: Michonne's double beading at the convenience store. Silent. Deadly. Badass. Exactly what this post apocalyptic world needs. If Michonne is anything like her character in the comics, this kill is just one of many.
'Shit. I really do have to give birth in here huh?" |
Best character development: The whole group. Rick is more decisive. Carl is no longer scared of using a gun. Maggie is comfortably killing zombies in hand to hand combat. Its nice to see that everyone pulls their weight and knows how to handle a gun. Most dramatic development: Carol. When we last saw her she more or less as valuable to the group as a puppy. Aside from doing household chores, she wasn't able to do much else (i.e. search for her own daughter, protect herself, vote on what to do with Randy, etc.). Now she can shoot a gun, even if it doesn't always hit the intended target. And hey, she's got the balls to flirt with the impenetrable badass of steel, Daryl Dixon.
"You think you hated me last season when I got Dale killed? Just wait until I hit my awkward puberty years."--Chandler Riggs as Carl Grimes. |
Feel good moments of the week:
-Beth and Maggie's beautiful duet. That whole scene reminded me of the wonderful, happy campfire scene back in season 1 right before everything went to shit and Amy died.....................then I got sad.
-Glenn and Maggie's tender little "I'm checking for bites"/kissing-you-even-though-you're-covered-in-zombie-blood moment.
-Maggie's adorable "see that?!?!!?" after she figured out how to kill the riot gear walkers.
-Rick's multiple cries of "DARYLLLL!" whenever he needed his help. Daryl = a better, badder, more loyal Shane for Rick. Added bonus: no threat of Daryl sleeping with Lori. Ladies and gentlemen, it's a certified BROMANCE.
Fangirls around the country have died by the thousands. |
Quotes of the week:
-"Im goin down first."- Daryl, "Even better."- Carol
-"These assholes don't stand a chance." -Rick
-"I'm doin' thangs Lori, isn't that enough?" - Rick
-"I ain't sleepin in no cage"- Daryl
-"You know who doesn't give a shit about that? This baby." -Herschel
Squeamish moment of the week: It's a tie between the zombie's face falling off and Herschel's brutal ax driven leg loss.
Yay.....sleepover? |
Say what?!: As cool as it was to see zombies walking around in riot gear, how on earth did they die (or get bit) if they're wearing such impenetrable suits?
This whole sleeping-zombie-that-conveniently-looks-dead-and-then-suddenly-out-of-the-blue-decides-to-wake-up-and-bite-Herschel thing comes off as a blatant plot device by the writers.
Was anyone else slightly confused/disturbed by the weird little Carl/Beth interaction in the prison cell?
Wow-I'm-Actually-Starting-to-feel-bad-for-Lori-Grimes o'meter:
