Gotham
Network: FOX
Premiere date: Monday September 22, 8pm
Starring: Donal Logue, Ben McKenzie, Jada Pinkett Smith, David Mazouz, Robin Taylor, Camren Bicondova
Synopsis: "The origin story behind Commissioner James Gordon's rise to prominence in Gotham City in the years before Batman's arrival."--IMDb.com
What it has going for it: Who can say no to a Batman prequel (especially one that stars Ryan Atwood!)?
Red Band Society
Network: FOX
Premiere date: Wednesday September 17, 9pm
Starring: Octavia Spencer, Dave Annable, Zoe Levin, Astro, Charlie Rowe
Synopsis: Red Band Society follows the lives of a group of teenage patients living in a hospital ward.
What it has going for it: Octavia Spencer. She's talented enough to warrant giving this probably way-too-sappy show a shot. Bonus: the gorgeous Dave Annable (Brothers and Sisters) plays Dr. McAndrew.
How to Get Away With Murder
Network: ABC
Premiere date: Thursday September 25, 10pm
Starring: Viola Davis, Alred Enoch, Matt McGorry, Jack Falahee, Charlie Weber, Katie Findlay
Synopsis: "A sexy, suspense-driven legal thriller about a group of ambitious law students and their brilliant, mysterious criminal defense professor. They become entangled in a murder plot and will shake the entire university and change the course of their lives."--IMDb.com
What it has going for it: Any show produced by famed tv writer, Shonda Rimes, is sure to be a wild, addicting ride. Viola Davis as the lead is going to be a big draw for many people (including myself). Having a (semi-)beloved character from Orange is the New Black (officer Bennett!) doesn't hurt either but the show's mysterious, competitive premise is alluring enough on its own.
Transparent
Network: Amazon Prime
Premiere date: Friday September 26, 2014
Starring: Jeffrey Tambor, Gaby Hoffmann, Melora Hardin, Amy Landecker, Jay Duplass,
Synopsis: "An LA family with serious boundary issues have their past and future unravel when a dramatic admission causes everyone's secrets to spill out."--IMDb.com
What it has going for it: Television is finally catching on to what audiences have been wanting for years: diversity. With numerous networks clamoring to make a name for themselves, we have more choices than ever when it comes to the kinds of stories being told. Orange is the New Black, Scandal, Sleepy Hollow, Brooklyn Nine-Nine, Modern Family, The Mindy Project, The Walking Dead, etc., are producing stories with people of all colors, sizes and sexual orientations. Now Amazon's newest series, Transparent, shines a light on a group of people that is still immensely underrepresented on television: the transgender community. It will be great to see Jeffrey Tambor, an actor best known for his hilarious work as the patriarch of America's dumbest family of narcissists (Arrested Development), in a more serious role.
